The season for wearing hats has begun! Whether you are going to a wedding, christening, the races, polo or a fancy summer garden party often hats are required and not always optional. You may have been shopping around for the perfect hat or looked into renting one but have you considered making one yourself? Handmade fascinators are not only easy to make but you can create one that is more personal to your style to go with a particular outfit, lowering the risk of going to an event with someone else wearing the same as you!
We have an easy tutorial that shows you how you can easily make one yourself, and you don’t need to be an expert in sewing, crafts or DIY.
You will need:
- Sinamay Fabric
- Needle and thread
- Glue gun
How to make it:
1: Take a square piece of sinamay fabric and fold it in half to form a triangle. Cut along the diagonal fold line.
2: Measure a 4 inch wide strip, chalk a straight line with your ruler and cut out the strip. Take this stripe and take the bottom and fold it up to the center of the strip. Then take the top piece and fold it down to touch the bottom strip you have folded up.
3: Fold the new strip in half to hide the newly folded in edges
4: Pull the strip to tighten the length and then iron with steam
5: Trim off the ends so they are straight and take each strip and fold into a figure of 8. Pin the figure of 8 shape so it is secure. Repeat this with your 3 strips. On one strip you can wrap it around your fingers to make a coil. Then layer your pieces ontop of each other, to make the style of fascinator your want and sew together, removing the pins as you go.
6: Sew the fascinator onto your headband. Put it on to see what needs maneuvering and where you should add your feathers. Then secure your feathers. You can also add beads if you wish.
